Eppie Johnson, a restaurateur with a flair for unusual promotion and an avid skier, took up kayaking in 1973 under the tutelage of kayak instructor/racer and K2 Ski salesman Mike Ewing. That winter Eppie's Restaurants co-sponsored a freestyle skiing event with Ewing at Boreal Ridge near Lake Tahoe, and it was after that successful event that Ewing suggested Eppie create a race that featured skiing, kayaking, and cycling near Truckee in the Sierra.
Creating an event requiring teams or individuals to complete three different athletic competitions during the same race was a new idea. No one had heard of a triathlon at the time. Naturally Eppie was fascinated by the idea.
Mike suggested that Eppie could begin his "Great Race" by skiing down from the top of Alpine Meadows Ski Resort to the road, then biking to the Truckee River at River Ranch. Participants would finish the race by kayaking to Truckee. ..
